The National Deaf Women’s Summit 2026, organized by the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) Women’s Section in collaboration with Sound Sense Deaf Empowerment Initiative (SSDEI), was successfully held at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Maitama, Abuja.

The summit brought together stakeholders, advocates, and members of the Deaf community to address challenges and explore opportunities for promoting the progress and inclusivity of Deaf women and girls, with a strong focus on girl child education.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Hajia Monsurat Fasasi, who emphasized the importance of collaboration and support systems for Deaf women and girls. Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives from key institutions, reinforcing the shared commitment to advancing disability inclusion and equal opportunities.

Key sessions during the summit focused on leadership development, mental health awareness, and addressing gender-based violence within the disability context. These sessions were facilitated by experienced professionals, including Ayoade Beyioku Alase, Hannatu Hannis Ishaya, and Friday Ejeh Paul, who provided practical insights on leadership, well-being, safety, and protection for Deaf women and girls.

Also a presentation delivered by Mr. Hosea Handan, an NGO Development and Inclusion Consultant SSDEI, on the topic “Nothing About Us Without Us: Advancing Deaf Women and Girls Through Inclusive Policy and Support Systems.” The session emphasized the importance of inclusive policies, community participation, and partnerships in promoting sustainable development for persons with disabilities.

The summit concluded with action planning discussions aimed at strengthening education, leadership, protection, and empowerment initiatives for Deaf women and girls. The event reaffirmed the collective commitment of stakeholders to building a more inclusive society where Deaf women and girls can thrive and reach their full potential.
